As you can tell by my screen name I am an old lady who digs. I have been wanting to try metal detecting for awhile but not invest a lot until I see whether or not I like it. I already have one expensive hobby with photography so I bought a Harbor Freight 9 function. I have been out in my backyard twice.  Found the usual assortment of rusty nails and screws, a copper cable, and a battery terminal.  Last night I found an old copper cased bullet.  It has a lead tip. The bottom of the shell is marked U.M.C. along the top and 45 GOVT along the bottom. If my research is correct this shell was manufactured prior to 1911.  After that the shells were marked UMC - REM.  Anyone have any helpful information?  I will try to post a photo a little later.

No. 8  UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY CONTRACT EXTERNALLY PRIMED MULTI-BALL CARTRIDGE:   Externally primed UMC Contract .45/70 Multi-ball cartridge.  These unique cartridges were part of the ongoing use of cartridges loaded with multiple projectiles, dating back to the "buck and ball" paper cartridges.  Loaded with three round balls, these cartridges could create a devastating field of fire when delivered in a volley from a body of troops.  In excellent condition, headstamped "U.M.C. .45 GOVT".  $20

Heres what I found it may not be what you have however?. If you'll google umc 45 govt and click on the photo's I think you will see what you have? and description....So, again I  Welcome you to Thunting from S.E.Ks. . I hope you find the forum interesting and helpful. Don't forget to share your finds in "Todays finds", as you find them. We all like to see what other members are finding...

Do's the shell have a groove all the way around it?

Thanks for the info. I do not see a groove but what I have does look like the photo you referenced. Cold and rainy here so don't know if I will be able to dig tomorrow but I hope so.

Hello and welcome.
You did really well with that Harbor Freight detector.   .45/70 cartridges and bullets for the Trap-door Springfield rifles (and the .54/55s for carbines) are prized finds out here in Arizona, especially "live drops" where the entire cartridge is intact and unfired.    Copper 45/70s are rare as they were only made for a few years because they were more prone to jamming than were brass cartridges.
