Hello everybody. I'm completely new to this area of interest (online) but have been fascinated for years. I look forward to reading as many posts as possible to get help from those of you who have great experience. Living in NJ it seems to me that I am less likely to find areas to look and I need to start learning. Thanks in advance for help your posts will give me.

Take care and Happy Hunting!

Hello, janeayr, welcome to THunting.com.

I'm sorry to hear you have the twin challenges of living in New Jersey and having a grandfather who taught at that school in Austin to deal with---never fear, though---both can be overcome  Grin  (heck I work with a girl from New Jersey and even have a couple of friends who chose t.u. (probably because they didn't know how to find A&M)).

On a serious note, don't sell New Jersey short----after all the Dutch settled the area in 1602, so there have been people losing metal objects in New Jersey for at least that long.   Lots of history and lots of people passing through (and even fighting there) means lots of potential treasures to be found.
When it comes to finding it, you've got several approaches.   You can literally walk out either your front door or your back door and start swinging the detector and digging the signals and follow the detector where ever it leads you (making sure you get permission from private land owners first and avoid public lands that are "off-limit").   Along the way, you'll figure out what types of areas are the most likely to yield their treasures to you.    On the other end of the spectrum, you can immerse yourself in the history of your town, county, and state, reading everything you can get your hands on (especially OLD papers and local histories written by old timers) looking for clues about where people USED to meet and and who might have hidden money.    Probably you'll wind up doing a combination of both.   Which ever method you choose, you'll find tips for success throughout our boards.   You might want to start with the Beginners board, though (after you check to see if there is anything of interest in the New Jersey board).   Also, if there is a metal detector club near you, plan on attending at least one meeting.  You might find it worth joining and you might not but you won't know until you attend a meeting and talk to the members.

Well, just looking at your name I can see where your loyalties lie!!!!  Smiley

I want to thank you for your great suggestions.  With street names like Schraalenburgh around I'm embarrassed to say I didn't think of the Dutch. Great suggestions.

Thanks to everyone who's been kind enough to welcome me. I hope to be able to contribute and learn as I delve into this wonderful adventure.
