Garrett Deepseeker and Ace 250
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:39:30 pm »
Go Up Go Down

I'm new to this forum.  I have a Garrett Deepseeker I bought for $300 in the 70's.  I played with it, but being young, found other interests.  Been collecting dust in my garage for over 30 years.  Yesterday I found it, put in new 6 each - 9 volt batteries and turned it on!  Worked like it did when it was new.  TR discrimination is still tough and VLF mode picks up everything in the ground.  Took my grandaughter out with it and told her she would find coins.  I always did, every time I used it.  She found three cents and was excited!  Not for the 3 pennies, but because it found her some coins, as I promised.  Still very heavy and can wear out my 60 year old arms, fast!
Thinking of buying an Ace 250 as it has good reviews and is light!  Yup, no forearm cuff on the Deepseeker too!  I will keep the Deepseeker forever. Wise

Hey, ecviggy.....welcome to THunting.com.  Those Garrett Deepseekers were and are good machines (as evidenced by how well they hold up on the resale market even now).   As for the Ace 250, it's a proven machine, too.

Thanks, as I recall, the deepseeker was "top of the line" in the 70's and cost me $300.  I never could get used to the TR discrimination, as would sound off unless you kept the coil about 2" off the ground.  Lower or higher would drive it nuts and me too.  One reason I want another Garett is because this 30 something year old detector runs like it was new.

Welcome ecviggy,  Keep your deepseeker.  I used mine since the middle 70's.  I had all the different size coils and the ARM REST WITH VELCRO TO HOLD IT IN PLACE.  Without the arm rest I think I would have given up years ago.  I gave my deepseeker to a friend and almost cried to see it go.  Replaced it with a Garrett 250 and what a difference that made.  Both machines are good, its just that you can go longer with the lighter machine.  Try turning down your TR sensitivity knob some and try the TR mode again.  Once you get your deepseeker working properly, you may not want to get rid of it...but if money is no problem by all means get the Garrett 250 ace.  I got the 250 for my wife as it is SO lite and she doesn't have much upper body strength.  But when I have to backpack in someplace or if I am going to be detecting all day I use hers.  It don't use up the batteries like the deepseeker does too.  Also get in the habit of wearing ear phones.  You can hear the sounds better and you don't drive other people crazy listening to your weird noises.  Remember to hunt in VLF then when you find a target use your TR to narrow down your signal so you don't dig a BIG HOLE.  Good luck and have fun.
