| Don't overlook your own backyard, Neil. Union soldiers camped all over South Jersey and many Revolutionary War battles were fought there. The gun runners during the Revolution arriving from the West Indies and Virgin Islands unloaded their gear in South Jersey and moved them by horse and wagon to Washington's Army. The mobsters in the '20s, '30s and '40s used the dense forests for making moonshine during prohibition. Homes built like sugar plum drops during the 1940s and 1950s are still standing with coins from those eras in the lawns and sidewalks. Parks built then would be loaded with 60 years or more of goodies probably covering campgrounds from the Revolution and Civil War.

I have been over my 1960's home's small yard many times and found more silver than any other single site. It is my backyard finds that got me hooked. First with the silver (found with a White's PRL1 Industrial detector, my first), and then finding a circa 1850 crotal bell. The very next day I was searching town records.
The British marched a few short miles from my house in June of 1778, after leaving Philadelphia on their way to Monmouth. I know the spots where 15,000 British troops camped out. There was even a skirmish nearby in which at least one Continental soldier was killed. Although I have not found any pewter buttons at the site (yet), I did find a musket ball fired from a Brown Bess rifle, more than likely a British round. I also recently found a small colonial silver plate civilian button in my yard which was missed by four other detectors before my V3 detected it.
Now that I have moved up to the V3 I am hoping to find more relics at the revolutionary site(s).
