Hello I've just joined your forum and it looks good, today i found a Hammered Henry III in top condition so things are looking up.  I will look forward to hearing tales of your finds from around the globe.

I added an attachment of some Celtic gold with two gem stones that i foun recently.

It is amazing what they could do, way back when... it looks like lost-wax technique, and just unexpectedly good technique, at that.  Shocked Shocked

I used to know  a Lanc-ky, who placer mined in Northern BC, where I live... a Jerry Brooks... not likely you would know of him, but I keep running into co-incidences! I know, I know,  Lancashire is a big place.... and he left there in the 30s.

Hi, Goldigger sorry i only know  Terry Brooks never met him but read His books.  Is that what they did when making  things like that i would like to see it being done.

That is what it looks like to me, I can not see forming a complex piece of gold, like that, by6 hand. If the artisan had access to bees wax it would be fairly simple, the only other thing might be gypsum plaster. Clay could be used.

The model is made, of wax pieces, which can be welded with a hot sliver of metal, it is made to fit all the stones, then a sprue or sprues are attached, and is is encased in plaster or clay, When the plaster/clay is dry and set, it is heated and the wax is sucked into the mold material. Then molten gold is poured into the mold, the mold is carefully broken, when cool. lastly, the sprues are trimmed off and the stone are mounted and crimped in with a Burin.

This is much the process today, and sometimes with some refinements.

I have  never seen any of  the Celtic work without stones, before, so could not see the process.

Well, I never seriously thought you might have heard of Jerry, it was in the way of a conversation filler.  Grin

The Peace River, in the 1930's, during the great depression, had lots of itinerant placer miners using everything from pans to rockers to sluice boxes. There was no other way to make a living. The biggest operation was Mahaffee Mines, at Branham flats which is now under 600 feet of water in Williston Lake,
a huge hydro project. The (Mahaffee) operation was mechanized, while every one else was doing hand work. Jerry Brooks was one of the young men, from all over the world, looking for their fortune... He stayed.

Dawson Creek (mile zero on the Alaska Highway), where I now live is a few miles south of the Peace River, and this is NOT the same Peace River as is in Florida. I was born at Fort St John, 51 miles north of here and on the NORTH side of the river. At one time IT was the only road, in or out.

There is a creek, on the north side of town (Fort St John, BC,) where about 200 Yukon Gold Rush-ees spent the winter. I could still see the remains of their shacks, when I was a  kid.

I have often wondered what  a person might find, with a detector.... it is all private property, now.

Goldigger, gold is malleable and fuses together just with the heat generated by pounding it. No lost wax process is needed for such a simply form. From a block of gold, the inner squares would have been pounded in either singly or en masse.

I know about gold's malleablity, if you seriously think that is beaten, I have a bridge to sell you!  Grin Grin

Look at it again, I doubt if that was ever pounded and what you are saying applies to sheet gold, beaten between 2 pieces of leather. Lost wax, is easy, saves labour, and does not need special molds for forming.

Try it, you will like it.  Shocked

Lost wax will work for ANY metal.  Great

goldigger

OK, I blew up the picture, and could see what can only be mold marks, in the gem sockets; if it were beaten, it would be very smooth. It was certainly cast, and lost-wax is a most likely candidate.  Wise
