good luck. u might check with local archeaology, and history buffs to find out what to look for and where. You might not want to mention the metal detecting right away. I would then suggest contacting metal detecting companies, tell them who you are, where you are, and what you want to do with a machine and see if they will sponsor you by giving or loaning you a machine. Having found out the local history and what sorts of significant things you might find could help you present a good case. Once you've found some important stuff, ask a university, or big camera company, to loan you a good digital camera. Never hurts to ask. You could do the same with universities, etc. Maybe you can think of other sources that could help you.
