Hello everyone on THUNTING, this is my first time on this site and I have to say I am excited to be here. I'm sure I'll gain a lot of knowledge here and hopefully have plenty to share. Thanks, John

Howdy, JD.....Welcome to THunting.com.    So where are you at and have you got a detector yet?  If so, what kind?   By the way, I highly recommend you spend a few hours reading the previous posts in the Beginners section (and also the one that pertains to your particular brand of detector) + any of the other boards that catch your fancy.

Thanks for the quick replies, I'm from that state way up in the northeast corner they call Maine (best darn lobster in the world) and am pretty new to detecting. Other than finding a sterling silver spoon my first time out with a $150 dollar bounty hunter I havn't done a lot of detecting. I am in the process of purchasing a whites mxt because I have a lot of colonial era foundations that are untouched (mid 1700s) in my area, so I feel an upgrade is in order. Is the MXT a good choice for beginners, Thanks

" Is the MXT a good choice for beginners"-----It's not a detector one generally thinks of when one thinks beginner.  On the other hand, there is no reason why a beginner can't start with it.   The basic functionality for it is simple enough that you should pick it up quickly---and the capabilities of the machine are such that you should be using it happily for a while to come.   If you take the time to learn the machine, you should be really pleased with your purchase.

I'm glad you didn't discourage me because just by chance I won an MXT e-series on e-bay for $600. I'm sure it will be a big improvement over my $150 Bounty Hunter. The MXT comes with an extra coil, (DD Shooter) a soft case, extra battery case, manuels, and head phones. I think I got a pretty good deal, although I havn't received it yet. Description said it was only used a couple of times and by looking at the photos I'd have to say they are right. Is this a bargain or did I pay to much ?
I just received the MXT in the mail and had a chance to try it out on my back lawn. After one hour detecting I pulled two lincoln pennys from the early 70s, a nickel dated 2005, and believe it or not an 1819 liberty penny, wow weren't expecting to find that. I guess my back lawn was someones field about 200 years ago. And then I moved to the front of the house and dug up two treble gilt buttons. The MXT is impressive and I'm looking forward to hunting more treasure. I was lucky today and didn't dig much trash at all, but I think I have a lot to learn, and could be rejecting treasure. My new house is about 100 ft. on the south side of an old colonial foundation. The Liberty Penney was found on my back lawn about 400ft. south of the colonial foundation. The penny seems out of place that far from the foundation, and other than finding two treble gilt buttons I havn't been able to get close enough to the old foundation because of very thick underbrush.
