Hello and welcome John.

The Garrett Ace 250 is one of the favorite starting detectors among our members.   Many of them hang onto theirs as back-up units.   They are good, reliable machines---pretty easy to learn the basics on, but complex enough that those who take the time to master them can shock those who don't.

Use the search function at the top of the page to search "Ace 250" or go to our Garrett board and you'll find lots of tips on how to get the most out of your new 250.

And if you haven't bought the detector yet, search "best detector" for some other possible detectors in the same price range.

Hi John & welcome to the forum & detecting. Here's a link of your area that seems to cover the history pretty well so you might get some ideas where to look for old things.

It would be best to start detecting in your own backyard though - you need to learn detector, how to pinpoint the target, how to dig to retrieve the target, etc. Good luck. Sue

Thank you sue,
That was my plan I have a medium size yard but the house is 118 years old so I might find something there. Also thanks so much for the link.

Welcome.  You can not go wrong with a Garrett Ace 250.  If you hang on until the Garrett AT PRO comes out it will cost more but you would be getting the Ace 250 plus 2 or 3 more machines in one.

Ace is a nice machine. Light weight and dependable. Try old schools and churchs but make sure to get permission 1st. They get cranky if you don't...

Welcome to the fun world of THer hunting

thank you for the info. The old high school in town was torn down in the mid 60 and the land turned into a park. Would be worth taking a look at.

oh, yeah.....for sure.   especially if there was a school on the site for a long time (which was usually the case with the "old" schools that got shut down/torn down in the 60's and 70's)
