Welcome from Arizona.  My wife was born in your fine city.   Start with your own backyard and frontyard.  When you can recover items without killing the grass, asks your friends and relatives (especially if they live in older neighborhoods for permission to hunt on their property.   Also, the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street is usually public right of way, so you should be able to hunt there BUT it isn't worth getting into an arguement with a homeowner who things he/she owns it.

The more experienced hunters are a great resource and they usually have a group hunt every month that will introduce you to new areas.
