Went detecting about 20 years ago on a beach in Vancouver BC with my son.  He had borrowed a Fisher metal detector that must have weighed close to 7 or 8 lbs.  We found a $1 plus in change and a small silver ring.  I always wanted to try treasure hunting but never found the time.  Now fully retired I read a lot of reviews by a lot of so called experts and then bought the new "Garrett AT Pro International".  Seems like a nice machine however with the temperature  currently sitting at 22F/-5C and the white stuff called snow on the ground the new gear is sitting in closet waiting for spring.  If there is anyone in the Quinte West, Belleville area of Ontario, drop a line and better yet some ideas for a newbie of where to search...   Cheers...

Hi Crusty,

      Welcome to THunting.com.
      If you can't search, research.
This long, cold stretch would be a great time for you to sit down with as many books on the history of your area as you can find as well as with a couple of good maps and start looking for places to hunt.   Old newspaper are great, too.  Basically you're looking for anyplace that people might have gathered and exchanged (and lost) money, like old fair sites, picnic areas, parks, etc.   Also look for stories of people either coming into or losing a money quickly.   And speaking of maps, see if you can find some old maps (including the oldest road maps you can find) of your area.   Those will help you identify possible ghost town sites.
You'll find many more suggestions by scanning our beginners board as well as some of the other boards and by using the search tool at the top right of the page.

Once again, welcome to THunting.com.

BA

Thanks V-burgh.  I spent 14 years of my Military career in Western Canada around the 54th parallel.  It does get pretty cold up there so I guess I can't really complain...  Today being winter solstice it is all down hill and warmer weather is on its way...

Thanks for the welcome Karl.  Would you like me to mail you some snow.  LOL...  We only have 3 or 4 inches but its enough for me.  Had hoped to go south in the new year for some warmer weather but the better half is going in for knee replacement surgery in Feb so we will have to tough it out this year... Embarrassed
