Hello Rick and Welcome from upstate NY
Since your just starting out with very little knowledge of detecting my suggestion to you would be read, read and reread your machines user manual. The way I see it,you have to get to know your machine and everything about it.You may have already gone through you user manual a few times, well go through it a few more.
Next you should decide what your interest in detecting is,just looking for coins at the tot lot, looking for relics, maybe looking to find some old silver coins or even some gold or maybe your looking for everything you can dig up.
Air test or bench testing is one way to see how your machine reacts to different metals, this will give you an idea of your machines capabilities.Air test will not give you the same exact responce as to metals that is buried but it will give you an idea.
Next start out in your back yard,Have your user manual handy so you can look up anything your not sure of.Sweep your yard as indicated in your manual and make sure to DIG EVERY TARGET and make note of how your machine reacted to the kind of metal you dig up.Till you get really use to your machine it will behove you to dig every target, after you get use to it you will start to know which targets are good and what you consider junk.Just remember that no detector is 100% at finding good solid targets.
I look at it like it's 50% detector and 50% user.In the end result it will be you who make the decision weather to dig or not.A number of the older MDers does not rely on the led screens for target info.In time you will probably find that the led screens are not very accurate.Listen to your machine tones as you detect a target, dig it up and make note of the tone and the target found.

I hope this may help you to at least get a start at detecting.
There are a lot of very knowledgeable detectorist on this forum and if you have any question just ask and I'm sure someone will be more then happy to give you a helping hand.
Remember Rick if your going to stick with this great hobby for many years to come  you gotta have fun with it........  Great
