Is there any advantage to an older machine (1976)?

Hello Metalmania,  Welcome from South Carolina. I have an old whites 6000D that I sent back to Whites for an overhaul and it is still a great detector besides the fact that it is heavy and hard to swing for long periods. If you like your old machine it might be worth sending it in for a checkup. Any how, dig in and get to know people. there is allot of good folks and knowledge in here.  Coffee

Go Up Go Down

I got a White's Coinmaster in 1976, and did a fair amount of digging growing up in Pennsylvania.  I did find some older coins, but lots and lots of pull tabs (relics now).  I have used it sparingly since the 80's usually for a purpose of finding something (property pegs, lost parts while working on something, etc.)  I live in a remote area of North Carolina now. Last October my mower threw a blade and I got out the Coinmaster and found the missing bolt in a couple of minutes.  Yeah!  I put the machine away until a couple of weeks ago.  A friend asked me to help find a property marker.  When we went to find it, we found that the detector no longer works.  The light comes on, no tone is heard, and adjustments don't seem to have any affect.  So I am attempting to get it working again myself as money doesn't grow on trees.  It does grown in the dirt, but I can't find that unless I get the thing working again. Cheesy  I have some basic electronics skills and equipment.  Wish I had an O-scope.  Always wanted one, but my primary motivation as a kid was to run the stereo through it to "observe" the waveforms of the music.

New units seem to cost about the same or even less than what my mom paid for this Coinmaster, but I am sure that they won't last 35 years, probably not even 3.5.  Most probably aren't even made in this country anymore just like everything else.

We have found a couple of interesting places nearby for prospecting.  There is a 1970's vintage playground, a couple of homesites that have been vacant since about the 1940's.  Houses are on some old USGS maps, but only some misplaced stones and daffodils remain as evidence at the sites.  They are in non-accessible areas and haven't been disturbed since the 1970's.

This looks like an interesting forum and I appreciate the helpful advice in advance.

Go Up Go Down

 Hello Metalmania
Good to get to know a little about you.
Well as I've always said ,to each his own. From what I have heard the coinmaster is a good white's machine and if you like going old school then that would be the way to go.I guess it depends on how much your planning on using a MDing machine and what you are looking for.from your story that old coinmaster seems to have helped you out in a few ways plus finding you some coins.
Don't get me wrong,if your just going to use it to find missing parts and anything else you lose and maybe a hunt or two a year then it would probably pay off to fix her up or have it fixed for you.Like I said the coinmaster is a good machine and looks as if it served you well through the years, but boy MDing machines has came a long way since 1976,a long ways!
Now just because you see modern machines that cost the same or even less then your coinmaster do not discount them. With all the technology packed into these modern units the company's can afford to make better machines at a lower cost to them,in turn the savings is passed on to you.I'm sure there is plenty of people on this forum that will tell you that there is 200.00$ machines out there that will out perform 1000.00$ machines at certain task.
Now I hear ya bro,you want a machine that is AMERICAN made.I can't blame you there.
There are a lot of american company's out there that make and take pride in their machines.Tesoro with their life time warranty comes to mind first,Garrett is another good company and a few more that you can find in this forum or in a web search.
Do some internet research if your interested in what's out there these days,I'm sure you will see things has changed a lot in 35 years.Check out some machines and going prices at kellyco.com.We have a pretty lady named Jamie on this forum that would be more then glad to help you out if you had any questions.
What ever you choose my friend, keep old faithful or upgrade to a new machine, I wish you luck in all your endeavors....... Great
