Go Up Go Down

I suppose that I am relatively new to serious metal detecting. Many many years ago I purchased an old army mine detector; long before metal detecting became a popular past time. I thought that maybe I could unearth some historic artifacts, but never did get the darn thing to work. When the kids were young I bought a cheap detector from a junk shop but only ever found nuts and bolts, an old horse shoe, and a brass .303 shell case.

When I retired at 65, I decided to buy myself a decent detector for working wet sand on UK beaches. Dolled out £229.99 for a C-Scope CS4PI and found that it would pick up a gents gold wedding ring at one foot under damp sand; a real doozy.

Recently found out that the beach I work regular was landmined in 1940. Demined and cleared for public use after WW2. Sigh of relief; until I read that when they cleared one beach in Southern England ther were 85 mine unaccounted for! Shucks; now what did I do with that old mine detector!   Shocked

Have seen it on UK tv; wet backs and all that. Me thinks that I will stay away from that border. I have enough problems with UK borders; the place is falling apart. The Scots and the Welsh don't love us any more and want to leave the union. Mmmm that sounds familiar! I don't think that we will have a civil war though.

Chris,
I honestly don't know the answer to that one, since I am new here too.. but I am so very jeleous that your over yonder, my problem is this, IF and I mean IF I was given the chance to head to your side of the pond, it would be a one way ticket only. The finds you all make over there are just mind blowing to me and I have always had a passion n love for your history.

Sadly I haven't made any fantastic finds yet. It turned out that the beach I have been detecting most was used for target practice by the USAF and RAF during WW2. I have been turning up plenty of .303, 50cal, and 20mm projectiles. I have now discovered the target zone and flight path for the fighters and avoid that area. Other than that it's scrap iron, broken glass and a few decimal coins.
Moved to an other beach last week and turned up a 1900 Victorian copper penny. The darned thing was as black as the ace of spades and looked like it had been in the sands for over 90yrs. What is detecting like in New Jersey? I read about a guy last week who took home a civil war cannon ball and started working on it in his front drive. The darned thing blew up and killed him! After all those years; who would have thought it?

                                                                 Chris

Well Chris,
Here in NJ and I have access to tons of different beaches up n down the east coast, Most of my finds have been lots of clad, tons of one earring..several wedding bands, and have found a few reales from a sunken ship. Of course they are my very best finds in my book.. I am trying to resize the last one I found, its a beauty in my book, if I can I might post it in the contest forum, but we'll see, as I am not too bright on this computer stuff.   But on the other hand, have you tried asking permission in farm fields, you might just get super lucky, I hear alot of friends over there, they look for pottery chards and so forth and start digging and ususally find some roman coins and even gold ones, lots of relics too in fields especially if recently plowed.. so maybe thats a thought to consider over there.. still am jeleous your there and here I am.. lol
