Unfortunately it is a hairpin, 4" in length, it could also have been used for drawing ribbon through cloth. I am still looking for the silver sword. Wink

Call me blind/dumb bu**  Smiley I looked at the pictures again when I returned to work - this time with glasses on. Wouldn't have been a very comfortable sword to use. A silver sword would be a rare find . . .  drawing a ribbon through cloth sounds more probable. Now I know what one is at least - should I dig one - about as likely as finding a silver sword  Smiley Sue

They are more common in the US than you might think.

More so today with the popularity of scrapbooking and other crafts. Bookbinders use an industrial version to sew books together.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

My grandmother had a needle like thing with a long eye that she used to put elastic in clothing seam casings - probably a version of a bobkin. That initial online definition certainly lead me off in the wrong direction. Thanks for the above link - I especially enjoyed looking at all the early decorative shards retrieved from privies. Always pick them up when I'm detecting old home site areas. Some day I'll have enough for a mosaic. Sue

Bodkins - had a feeling I would be seeing bodkins in the future  Smiley Here is a news story about a silver one found by a detectorist and a picture. Plus a use that was not mentioned earlier. Sue

Hey Sue, that is totally amazing, I have just spent three days on the Isle of Wight for a short break with my wife and spent a night in Yarmouth......weird.

By the way my trip to the Roman field was not that good, the corn stubble was a little to high for good detecting so I only found a few old Pennies and lead. I will let you know about the next trip that I am planning a little nearer the time

 Shocked

What a coincidence  Smiley I'm laughing. Wondered how the Roman search went. I've tried to detect in corn stalk stubble myself - difficult no matter how you try to position it. Here, they've adopted no till  Angry  but I just read how the farmer, from the recent Anglo Saxon find, said his father always told him he was ploughing too deep, but he kept going deeper and deeper. Hope your Roman site has a like minded gentleman tending it. Sue
