hi -  brand new to this but hoping to get some ideas on the best metal detctor for under ?200. live on london so itching to get down to the Thames foreshore!

Hi, Rich......welcome from Arizona.   
        With your budget, you should be able to pick up a pretty decent detector.  Defining which is best is a lot like trying to decide which automobile is best....it depends upon where you are going to use, it what you are going to use it for, your budget (which you've stated), etc. 
         While you are waiting for others to chime in, you might want to use the Advanced Search function at the top of the page to search the entire forum for "best detector".   There have been several recent posts which may help you set your criteria.  A couple of the posts include links to rating/review sites (including one based in the UK)
