Just a quick note to say hello to everyone and to let you all know up front that I know absolutely nothing about the art of treasure hunting and metal detecting. On the otherhand, I am a quick learner and have always been fascinated with the idea of learning something new everyday. So here I am... hoping that some of the old timers on here could help fill the voids in my mind with regard to the subject of prospecting for fun and $$$.

Thanks for the welcome, Catbird.  I have an unlimited number of questions, but sorting them out and putting them in an order that makes sense is another story. Where do I begin with the questions.

I have used a Bounty Hunter Range finder, and have had a little success in finding such things as coins and silver remains from broken bracelets and such, but have never had the time to take the matter serious.  I guess now is the time to get serious.

I am in need of a new and better detector, and funds are limited with my retirement. So, (with my background in bench electronics) I intend to build my own with high specifications. So, I guess the first line of question to the entire audience would be; What is the best detector to be found on the market, and is there a schematic available for that same detector?

Jerry

Jerry,

Be prepared to be swamped with info.   For starters, I suggest you go to the top of the page and enter "Best Detector" in the Advanced Search box and then select "entire forum", and press the search icon......you'll find that particular topic has been the subject of a lot of opinion.....which probably won't stop additional opinions from coming in.
In the meantime, welcome to the community.   We're happy to have you here.

Thanks for that tidbit.  I will follow through in just a couple of minutes.

Also, Thanks for the welcome and the warning about the 'swampped' condition that I might find myself in.  I love a challenge.

jerry, i agree with bitburgaggie, on this one, because everyone has a favorite detector and a answer for your question. i think some brands are better for water than others and some brands are better for finding gold than others, just like finding coins, or relics, everbody has their favorite choice. i like the whites xlt, but thats my choice for finding mylittle treasures. catbird..........
