Just signed up to this site.
I've always had an interest in beachcombing and would like to start work on a DIY metal detector.
I have done some soldering before and I have had a bit of experience with electronic parts so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Several which included White's, Fisher, Minelab, Garrett, and a couple Longrange Locators which did not work!

Lots of people have tried to build DYI  detectors, and most have given up when they realize that one can buy a very good (reasonably priced) detector and save themselves lots of time and effort.  Of course if you are an Electronic whiz,  Good luck and I wish you well.   I once thought about doing the same thing (having been in Electronics for several years), but soon gave up, cause I wanted to get out in the field and get going as soon as possible.
I understand that Australia has some pretty Hot/mineralized ground, and The Minelab Detector Co. there has detectors specifically designed to pretty much ignore the Mineralization there.

Good luck whichever way you decide!

Welcome aboard from the northern suburbs of Perth. Best of luck building your own. Parts can be hard to find here but you will find no shortage of good ideas on the forums.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
