Hello everyone. I am a complete newbie to metal detecting and don't own one yet but am pursuing the notion of building one concidering I am pretty good at eletronics. My only question would be what size wire for the coils are the best. i've seen several but not to convinced yet that 22 awg is really acceptable. thanks for any info.. BTW don't know who is the designer of this site yet but really like the smileys. Detecting

Hey fastman......welcome aboard.   Given your interest in building your own detector, you might want to head over to our Tech Talk boards and see what is going on there.  Several of our members have been building detectors and/or coils for a long time.  I know they often get into lengthy discussions  on coil building.

Welcome to the forum Fastman! I tried building a few metal detectors. One was called the Blind Squirrel, an the other an older Eric Foster design. I finished the Blind Squirrel but couldn't get it to work. The other one I gave up on. I enjoy building guitar pedals and thought I would be able to pull these projects off. I ended up getting a used Fisher CZ 20 on Craigslist for cheap. I've been watching the tides and getting down to the beach as much as possible. I got lucky and found a gold ring on my third time out. Now I'm hooked!

I too am new here, and I'm interested in building detectors as well.  I have several nice detectors already, but I'm trying to build a VLF detector for a very specialized purpose.  After searching for some time, I finally hit the jackpot with this site.  I'm really looking forward to becoming involved here.

Thanks.  I'm still trying to wade through the massive number of threads.  I don't know where to start!

Of course, it will help when I have 5 posts, and can view the attachments.  It's frustrating to see people discussing these great schematics when I can't see them!
