Ten years ago I bought from a friend a Whites PI 3000. He used it only a few times while diving and then stored it in his a/c'd basement, just as I have done for the past ten years. There is no corrosion inside or out and no signs of wear. He said the kit was designed for underwater use but will give acceptable performance on land.
The kit consists of two "sending units"(?) and two round "detectors" at the end of the pole, both of which are labeled "Pulse Diver 950". In addition to the detectors, one sending unit has a set of headphones attached and the other has a hard rubber 2-inch cube.
Six weeks ago I lost an 18kt gold bracelet in a ball field and thought I use this unit to help find it.
Questions:
1. Is this unit capable of finding the bracelet (assuming no one else has!)?
2. What do I have?
3. I downloaded the owners manual from the net. Do I just pop in some batteries and go from there to test it?

Photo's are worth a 1000 words. Sounds like the detector came with two lower shafts and Coils ? I suspect the hard rubber block is for under water Detecting. Vibrator ! Please post photo's !

Sounds like you have never fired it up. Yes put some batteries in it and see if it works.

Put the six AA batteries in as per users manual and see if it fires up. Here is some good info for you.

Test the capability of ur detector if really efective on land by detecting/finding your lost gold bracelet. Please post the result. Thanks

Yes it will find your bracelet.
What you have to do before you go out and advertise that you are looking for "something” learn how to use the detector.
PRACTICE
Practice in your back yard or your local park.10-15 minutes will not be enough.
3-4 hours will good 10 hours will be better.
Keep in mind that the bracelet will be on the serfice. So DONT look for deep buried targets.
You got a good machine. Learn how to use it and you will find your gold.

Six new AA and fired them up -- mixed results.
1. Unit one (with the headset) worked on the initial attempt and I got a return using my stainless steel watch, which was laying on the couch. Subsequent attempts with the watch on a Berber carpet were negative. I switched to a four-inch steel bolt with a nut and two washers but got no response on the sofa or floor. I took the bolt outside, set the coil on the ground and on a slate slab and had negative result on both surfaces and on both AUTO and pinpoint. Unit is dead?
Unit two (with the rubber clicker) was successful -- i.e., the click made a noise and vibrated -- but occasionally erratic. In AUTO and pinpoint modes the coil on this unit had negative results with the watch on the sofa and carpet, and the bolt on the carpet. In AUTO and pinpoint on the slate slab and on the ground the unit successfully found the bolt BUT the signal was so confusing it was difficult to determine the center of the target. I would get a strong response up to 2 feet away but it did NOT increase or decrease in intensity as I got closer. Therefore instead of a 6-12 inch target area I had 48-inch target area (24 inches either side of the bolt). Additionally, different segments of the coil seemed to react differently to different positions around the bolt. For example if the left side of the coil gave me a strong response I would turn my body and the coil so the front of the coil was now "leading the search" and the signal would get weaker, stronger, or even disappear. A damaged coil, maybe? Huh?

I'm thinking I'm out of luck with these two older units.
Any suggestions on repairs or other actions I can take to resurrect these dead and near-dead units?

Are there any controls on those things other then the On/Off ? Does the On/Off rotate for sensitivity ?

Try it with a smaller target like a coin alone. The couch is full of steel springs. Has a laugh when you said a chunck of iron.

My thinking is you put the poor thing in the Swamp.

Hey, guys, thanks for the tips and encouragement. I assumed I didn't know how to really use this thing and now I'm convinced. Shocked

Homefire: I see your point about getting nulls sitting on the couch full of metal springs. Duh. Funny

BTW there is a single button on the units with settings for On/Off, Battery Test, AUTO, PP. That's it, nothing else I can see.

So tomorrow I'll grab a pocket of change and go in the back yard and see what I can find.

Another hint something could be wrong internally on the units was revealed in a closer inspection today. On both electronic pods (?) I noticed distinct direction abrasion marks as if someone had scraped something along the interior walls as you would if you the innards were removed and replaced. Obviously I'm not going to take the things apart but perhaps the units had problems that needed attention.

I'll report back tomorrow with whatever results I have to see what the experts can suggest.
