Pioneer 505

Hello everyone.  I am Newguy.  I just bought a Pioneer 505.  I have read reviews its a good starting model for a novice and it can out perform some other much higher priced models at times.  Is this true?  How does it compare to the Garrett 250?
I live in a area that has super thick clay soil only 3 inches down, and its a real challenge digging.  This stuff is like adobe, lol.  I did get myself a good digging knife, but it looks like I need to carry around some type of shovel too.  As my name suggest, I am new, and I have not had much oppertunn [detecting]ity to use my new metal dect. cause its been so rainy here in Frisco, Tx and combine that with my clay soil from hell, I think I will have to wait untill it drys up a bit.
I appriciate any advice on using my new Pioneer 505, and dealing with clay soil.
Thanks,
Newguy.

Hey Newguy Welcome from Galveston Island.

Any detector is only as good as the operator.practices, practices, practices, As for the 505 vs 250 In my opinion the Garrett is a much better detector but we use what we have, what you learn with the 505 will help you when you upgrade later.
The clay Huh?Huh??? I can't be of help I make my wife dig in hard ground or clay. And no I am not worried she don't read this forum.

I just forwarded this to her by e-mail, mate.

Just kidding. That tinkling sound? Was that ice cubes in your veins, Seldom?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Newguy, welcome.   Seldom gave you the straight skinny.   You'll probably pick up lots of useful tips on our Beginners board while you're waiting for the ground to dry out.    Some of the basic skills you want to concentrate on are: 1) proper coil swing patterns   2) learning how to pinpoint using the detector (good even if you buy a pinpointer) and 3) making your holes disappear after you've retrieved the target.   You'll find tips for all those here someplace, but if you have questions just open a new topic (probably in Beginners) and you'll get answers.

Hi from North Central Florida and welcome to the group.... I love my 505!  For a beginner it is great to know the sounds and depth of your treasure.  I have had it since July of last year.  I'm still learning.  You will get to know the tones in certain area's. I always bring a few coins and rings with me to a new area to see how the tones are... here in Florida there are so many metal additives to the soils.  As for digging, that is why I bring my husband along... He loves to dig!

And all of theses folks are great!  I listen and research everything they tell me.  When you find your first silver or gold ring, the feeling is SOOOO GREAT!!!

Look forward to seeing more posts.

SharenH
