Doc, I run the 1st generation NGK. I believe the NGK Plus model comes with a smaller search coil. I can only comment on the old model: it was never designed to find small nuggets or flakes of gold, or coins or micro jewellery. At 12.5kHz, it's primary purpose is to find larger objects and caches. The chances are high that if you buy the NGK Plus for finding gold, unless you are fortunate enough to have nuggets of 2 ounces or heavier, you will probably be disappointed. I do not know how the small coil for the Plus model will react to noble metals. There was only one time I found gold with the medium search coil on...and it was a swath of gold flakes on top of white clay. The swath was about 18 inches long, roughly fan-shaped (or obtuse triangle shaped) and approximately 2 feet down.

I can heartily recommend (for your purposes) the Fisher Goldbug Pro. That machine has found me gold on several occasions, and at 19kHz, was designed for this job. I am currently pondering a new machine ...White's GMT @ 48kHz, or the Goldbug 2 @ 71kHz. Those machines are much more sensitive to very small flecks of gold, but do not have much detection depth. You can see some of the color I found in the Prospecting section of this site. Oh I almost forgot...welcome to thunting.com! Smiley
