I would suggest reading J Frank Dobie's books. Most of his books include treasure tales spanning a couple of hundred miles on either side of the Mexican-United States border from Brownsville, Texas to San Diego California. The one thing you have to keep in mind when reading Dobie is that he was first, last, and always a story-teller. He was interesting passing on the experience and feel of the tales told around campfires and in bars, etc. He was NOT particularly interesting in either their accuracy or whether they were even true. On the other hand a lot of them contains some sweet kernels of truth that can get your mind and heart racing and could even lead to some real treasure if you are willing to put in the time tracking down the stories behind the stories.
