Go Up Go Down

Hello from Panama, I am retired here and have no plans of moving back to the States any time soon.  Not with a Panamian wife, 4 dogs, 6 parrots and a couple metal detectors.  The only thing I wish I had was a couple horses, ie mountain ponys.  Other than that, life is good to great here in Panama.  As for the 'black sand' - try a magnet, it has worked for me in the past.  Enclosed are some photos of a few items I found here in Panama [until my wife put her foot down].

Welcome from Australia! Those are some amazing finds. Why did your wife want you to stop treasure hunting?

I also split your post into its own topic so others can comment and see it more clearly.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Howdy, and welcome.......what wife wouldn't want those little tidbits around (assuming they were all legally procured)?

Go Up Go Down

I stopped actively looking for these gold and tumbaga pieces after my wife complained that it was tantamount to grave robbing and / or looting.  It's ok for a 'professional archaeologist' to look and dig, but not a slug like me.  The Smithsonian controls most of everything down here even though they are pretty much usless....everything they find or get quickly disappears into obsecurity.  They have little or no desire to go into the Field, would rather party and lecture in Panama City.  At any rate, I still look and find - don't bother reporting any more.  I know of at least 20 sites and a possible city in a valley high up in the mountains near Costa Rica.  I say 'city' but it's hard to tell because of the heavy jungle.  Like I said "always poke'n and hope'n", lots of strange stuff here in Panama and once you take the trouble to actually get to know the people, the customs and above all - the Indians, you find it right in plain sight - like my black cliff and stream full of crystals.
