This is my first post.  I am new to this and would like to get started in the hobby.

I like doing electronic projects and would like to build a metal detector for meteorite hunting.  I am also on a very limited budget.  Has anyone built a md  for meteorite hunting and would it be cheaper than buying one?  Also is there a way to increase depth capability on a less expensive detector?  Thanks for any info.

Hello Stormy! Welcome to our forum. In what areas do you plan on hunting? If you plan on hunting for meteorites in the dessert, then a cheap PI machine should do the job and you will find several plans for building a decent PI detector on this forum.

regards,

Christian

Welcome.    Even a BFO would work for them.    You could build one for less then $20.00 if you do it right.

Thanks.  I sure didn't expect such quick response.  It's great finding like minded people and really good to find people that are willing to help out.

I am in the heart of central Indiana.  I would like to hit some of the idle farm fields so need to go fairly deep, probably.  The area has a lot of arrowhead hunters but not much else. I have been doing a lot of research since I saw some lady going out with some guy in the heart of Kansas and finding meteorites.  I am not so much interested in the monetary aspect as the astronomy.  My son is an astro-physicist.  We have been interested in what goes on in the sky for a long time.  I want to get some of these earth bound things to display in the house while I continue to study amateur astronomy.

Welcome Stormy and I saw a show about meterite hunting and they built a detector that they pulled along behind a 4-wheeler. Might google it to see if you can find it.

Hi Stormy and welcome. Good luck in your meteorite search. Nice thing about them is they continue to fall out of the sky!  Smiley The story about the Brenham meteorite in Kansas is a good read.

Hi Stormy,

Brand new to the site as well I wish I could be of help to you, but unfortunately I can't so I guess that means you and I are in the same boat when it comes to THunting. But what you are wanting to do with metorite hunting sounds exciting! I use to live out West for a time, AZ, NM and TX and the metos were always plentyful! I use to have a good collection of them from my childhood days, but when you have folks that work for the government as I did you move allot and unfortunately I lost allot and eventually all I had collected in the moves we made. However and in closing I want to wish you well, God speed and happy hunting!!!! Grin Grin Grin Grin

P.S.
Watch out for the falling rocks from spppaaacccceeeeee!!!!!!

Regards,
Dave D. Welcome
