Hello,

I am a new member and my interest is detecting primarily for gold. I'm currently searching for information regarding the relationship of loop size and detection depth. My understanding is that larger loops will detect deeper targets but wondering if there is a practical maximum size. I would greatly appreciate any info on this issue.

Thanks DonAu

The coil size is mostly down to two factors. If it is too large, there cannot be enough windings. The larger the coil, the greater the power required to drive it.

What are you looking for? There may be better ways than a PI metal detector.

Hello GD,

Thanks for your reply. Actually I'm curious as to how well a large loop works and am planning on winding up a few sizes and testing them on various targets at various depths. I was hoping to minimize trial and error techniques by finding data others had shared. However in searching the web I couldn't find much in the way of technical data that tabulated that kind of information. I did find a very good pdf document by MineLab that I think will be very useful. The web site for the pdf document is

Don, you have two factors which are critical and one that may be a nuisance. The inductance value is an absolute that you must not violate. If your original coil is 500uh, then any coil you build MUST be the same value. That means for larger coils, there will be fewer windings and because of that, lowered resistance. The resistance being lowered means you need to increase your power to drive the coil to expand its field fully in the same amount of time as the original.

The nuisance factor is the weight of the coil.

You still haven't said what you are looking for. A meteor? A buried truck? A cache? And why the obsession with coil size? Just for knowledge? If that's the case, see the attached for information on air core coils (which is what they are on a metal detector).
