I'm from the Syracuse area and new to the board. I am looking for an old map with former settlements (Ghost Towns) in Oswego County. I would appreciate any help.

Yesterday, a member, Alan, posted a link for ghost towns. You might want to check it out.

Hi Glsmn,

If you haven't been to this website, it looks like a pretty good starting point for you:

In addition to these two websites and the suggestions other members have given, I'd suggest going to used bookstores, estate sales, etc and buying the oldest New York road maps you can find.  By comparing the old maps to the new maps you'll find towns and roads that have vanished.   Also look for all business directories and old railroad information.

You say you're new to the board, but you don't say whether you are new to the hobby or not, so I'm going to assume that you are new.  If I'm mistaken and tell you something you already know, I apologize in advance.  When you are dealing with librarians, historical societies, etc it's generally best to tell them your interested in local history and pretty much leave it at that rather than tell them you're looking for a place to metal detect (unless they are the specific person who can give you permission to detect the site).   Too many people who aren't part of  the  hobby jump to false conclusions.
