Go Up Go Down

Hi all, I am new to metal detecting and wanted to start with a inexpensive detector.  I bought an XP Adventis on eBay that was described as in good condition and working.  I have had an initial go with it and it seems to beep all the time when swinging.  It all seems pretty random.  I have adjusted the settings to the recommended sensitivity etc.  Could it be the cable or connection and how can I check.  I would like to sort it out before I go out somewhere to seriously test it.  Many thanks.

Suspect mechanical issues, as you are doing. The most common failure in detectors are fairly constant. They are the cable where they enter or leave the coil and box or at the connectors. Also suspect the battery box or battery connectors. That's the number two most common failure.

One other thing to consider. Be absolutely certain that the area where you are testing this is free of metals or you will get those seemingly random beeps. Most people presume there floor is free of meta. completely forgetting that their are probably nails or rebar in the floor. Try it by extending the shaft and coil in open air on a table and passing metal in front of it held in your hand. Be sure to remove rings, watches and bracelets and only hold a known type of metal.

Get back to us after you try the "air testing."

How easy is it to replace the cable and where can you get them. I had a quick look and seem to only come with a coil as well and are well expensive.

you don't need to change the cable , you just need to open the connector , i think you will see a wire cut , just resold it at the right place

DO NOT START REPAIRING IT
before you are 200% what and where the problem is
or if you have a problem.
look for a detecting club in your area and pay them a visit.
it will be someone there that know your detector and tell you if it work as it should or not.

Tried 'air testing' and no beeps.  Tried on the garden again after testing with a nail.  Seems I must have dropped a lot of nails in the garden because I get the same signal.  Tried some silver and noticed the difference in sound.  Looks like it's working fine.  Now to join a club and get out detecting 😀😀😀

Excellent. I thought it was working normally. A friend of mine's wife chews gum and she used to throw her gum wrappers in the rose garden as she worked. Drove him nuts because, as we all know, gum wrappers are very hard to pinpoint.
