Good Day all,

I am a new metal detector enthusiast -- after having my ancient White's CM4D stolen, I purchased... well, another White's CM4D. I like old electronics.

There's snow the ground and the ground is frozen. So until then, I'm searching with Google Earth to scout good local areas.

My first location/idea: a ford across the Big Sioux River, just east of town, where the pioneers crossed the river. It is visible from Hwy 42.
There are a number of abandoned farm houses around the eastern counties. Many of them could be explored. The parks inside Sioux Falls have been landscaped many times, so anything old might be gone or too deep. However, there is the old "Yankton trail" to discover and some possible locations of old Fort Dakota (although its downtown and paved over.

Welcome from Arizona.   Sounds like a good place to hunt.

South dakota is certainly no as rich a place for metal artifacts as Arizona! I have a book on old Fort locations and Cavalry-Indian skirmishes which make it sound like a great place to hunt!  Have a great time in AZ... and enjoy your new snow.

Thank you all for posting a hello.

I haven't gotten around to searching the site yet, but I'm sure the idea of using Google Earth isn't a new one.

I just want to get some old maps from the library and match them to the imagery. There are also old historical markers around town which I'll now stop, read, photo and upload to Google Earth... just so I remember to come back to it.

Welcome from Arizona.  I have relatives in Vermilion and should be up in your neck of the woods in June.  Keep the mosquitoes down for me please.
