Fellow Treasure Hunters...  I am new to the metal detecting seen.  I have just placed an order for a White's Surfmaster Dual field and I intend to use it while SCUBA diving in the Great Lakes of the Midwest.  I have not a Clue yet despite reading a lot and watching videos on you tube and such.  If any one has good methods to help reduce my learning curve, I am all ear ...(please, please, please) Crazy  Thanks for all the great post here!

Welcome, mrgrd.......while you're waiting, you might want to scan through the previous posts in both the Beach & Shallow Water board (found in the Metal Detecting section) and the Shipwrecks and Sunken Treasure board (found in the Treasure Hunting section).  You can get to both boards by scrolling down on the home page.

Welcome aboard! The surfmaster is very easy to use. I've had it once. As it is a PI machine with no iron discrimation you will want to make it sure to use it in junk free areas with little iron junk (nails etc.) I hope that it will get you some great finds and look forward to seeing them!

Best wishes,

Christian

Surfmaster Dual Field

Well, I have had the Surf Dual Field for about a month now.  Shocked  For a fist detector it is a bit much to learn.  First lesson, get a big scoop!  Second lesson, add extra lead to dive gear to hold me to the bottom while I dig, and dig, and dig some more.  I have use my Dual field in total darkness at 8 feet with the best results so far (found a pewter religious medalion with he gold plating wearing off).  I have had it to 27' fresh water and no leaks!  I would like to get a new regulator set up that is much more quiet during operation to better here my tones.  There is a serious learning curve with this detector - I am finding a lot of junk stuff but it feels good to know that it works well.  I have been using it in Inland Wisconsin lakes and in Lake Michigan around old concrete piers.  I have been to some swimming beeches but until the last few days, the weather has not really been warm enough to bring out the swimmers (except the crazy little kids that don't mind the 48 degree water).  I got to tell ya, sight seeing while diving has become boaring since getting the Detector, now I want to search everyplace I dive!
