The first tip is get to know your detector real well. That means reading the manual a couple of times and, if possible practicing in a controlled environment (test patch), before you hit the field with it.
The second tip is to spend time reading the posts in the beginners section and in the prospecting section (since I assume your primary reason for getting that detector is to nugget hunt).
The third tip is to use the detector as often as you can (and try to keep track of how it performs in different circumstances).
The fourth and final tip---always find a way to make the outing a postive experience, even if you aren't hitting pay dirt every time you dig.
