Detecting
Howdy Y'all,
another newbie to T'Hunting from Texas,
having recieved a Garrett ACE 150 for Xmas.
I've been wandering around the farmstead
discovering the highly mineralized clay and iron ore
makes that puppy beep and sing like a slot machine,
that has just paid out big.
I'm having fun learning to use the detector
and look forward to the day I'll actually find something!
I've been into Rock hounding and prospecting
for some time, so the move to T'Hunting with
a metal detector seems to be a natural/logical step.
Can't wait to take a trip down to the gulf to
do a little beach detecting.

Thank You Kindly, Homefire.
This is a new thing for me.. I reallly am looking foreward to
getting out and hunting.  I'm almost retired, kind of a jack of
all trades over the years. A ships engineer in Alaska and the
Gulf of Mexico, seems i spent a lifetime driving a semi OTR,
but in reality, just a couple of years. Spent a decade or two
as a traveling millwright, so it's time to kick back a bit and
enjoy a much deserved second childhood.

Hello, sixdogs.   Welcome from Arizona.   So what part of Texas do you call home?

Howdy folks...
sorry for not replying sooner, been having difficulty getting this site to load..
tonight is the first time i've been able to get back to the site since my initial posts.

i live in north east texas, 100 miles east of dallas, near lake o'the pines,
in the mountains of NETex...
right now, we've got a few inches of snow on the ground, was down to 16 degrees
last night, woke up to a frozen water pipe.not exacttly a good start to the day!
my next door neighbor is a OTR trucker, he & his wife are out on the road right now,
i  had to go over to his house and check for frozen pipes  & shut the water off at the
meter, just in case any pipes were frozen.
went to try to find the meter but was covered with snow and impossible to see.
kicked snow around for a while with out any results, so I thought.....

why not try the detector to see if i can find it..

eureka!!!!!!!!!!!!!

worked like a charm, walked back to the house, got the little 150
went back next door & had the meter found in 4 or 5 minutes.

not sure if this counts as a "treasure", but it certainly was a "find".

dave...

(btw, the nickname comes from having 6 dogs,
we are a private foster/rescue home for small dogs.)

If it helped keep them from having damage due to frozen/burst pipes....then yeah, it's a worthwhile find.

yes, it was worthwhile, the neighbor's just bought the house last spring
and have been doing a total remodel, also had new plumbing & pipes(copper)
so if it saved his pipes, wonderful.  going to be as cold again tonight, so
i will certainly have my faucets dripping.
i had the 150 set on coins, since i was looking for a bronze valve, figured
that the copper in the bronze would show up like pennies, and was amazed
that it worked...

Not to mention that the neighbor probably will be agreeable to you detecting his yard for whatever goodies might be there after the snow melts  Smiley ---that's if he hasn't already let you do so.   And one person letting you search their yard often results in others also giving you permission, especially when they see that you are not leaving unsightly holes in the lawn.

Very true, I'm certain most of my neighbors would have no problem with my detecting on their land.
matter of fact, was going to speak with the neighbor about doing so. his piece of property was split off
of our farmstead some years back, the original house for our farmstead was on his property. it was demolished by the previous owners the first year we lived here, but we know exactly where the house was, so yes, when the snow does
evetually melt and they give permission, we'll take a walk over and see if we can discover anything.
used to be a one room school house about 1/4 mile down the road, torn down in the 50's(?) i'd like to check out, but need to talk with a neighbor that grew up in the neighborhood to get the location, and make sure my permission to be on the property is still in effect.  also the remnants of an old dog trot house is up the hill from us and i'd like to check it out.
