Garrett ADS Groundhog & PB Groundhog

Go Up Go Down

Detecting  I live in Aurora, Colorado and am retired....sorta.  After 30+ years of Industrial Sales, I retired in 2004.  Then a few years later, I started selling Promotional Advertising materials like Caps, Calendars, Pens, Tee Shirts, etc.  part time.  I love it and it gives me a bit of mad-money.

Anyway, I've loved Metal Detecting for many years.  Back "in the day", I built a Heathkit Metal Detector (sucker had a coil on it the size of a car tire) and had a ball with it.  Then, I bought 2 Garrett MD's...both Groundhogs; ADS & a PB for my wife.  Used the heck out of them back in Illinois (home state).  Then moved to Colorado in 1987 and got busy with "life" so very occasional TH'ing out here.

As I've told others, "I've always had a flame for this, anywhere from a Pilot-Light to a big Flame".  Now it's up to the roaring inferno state and I'm going to be doing a lot of this.  Plan to buy a new machine as soon as the money builds up.  Probably a White's MXT Pro.

Anyway, I found this Forum today while looking for comments on my old Garretts.  Looks like a great site and so here I am....ready or not.

Regards,

Keith AKA anvilmanco

I found this Forum today while looking for comments on my old Garretts.

First off, welcome from Perth in Australia.

I love my Garretts and still use them. My Groundhog is a bit heavy these days but the Sea Hunter in water is just superb. Back in the day, we had limited choices - Heathkit being one. Today, we are swamped with manufacturers and models to the point that we are spoiled for choice. This is a good thing but it complicates things a great deal for the new hobbyist.

Thanks GD, I sure would love to come visit "down under" someday.  I'm still waiting on my 2nd ship to come in cause the 1st one sank.

Anyway, that's the one thing that I'd like to figure out about the weight of those old Garretts.  I wonder if anyone viewing this has any ideas of how to "sling or waist" mount these.  Or, is it just kinda whatever you come up with.  It seems I remember that there was a way to do that.

Good Hunting.

Keith

Garret did sell a hip mount kit years ago. I plan on mounting mine in a plastic box and using a light weight aluminum "S" tube for the shaft. If I do, I'll detail the procedure here and add photos. Their shaft and box were made to take rough duty for sure but added probably 2 pounds to the rig.

Sounds good GD.  I'll be interested in seeing what you do.  If I come up with something, I'll post that as well.

Hi Keith, been to Colorado several times. In fact I'm hoping to move to the Boulder area soon. Really like it around that area. And with something like 300+ days of sunshine who could go wrong!  Smiley
