Hello everyone,
Thanks for all the work that you all do and share.
I don't know a thing about treasure hunting.
I would like to build myself a metal detector, more to seach for coins than for a real treasure.
I am looking forward to seeing my kids dig and find something someone used long ago, and imagine all kinds of stories.

By the way, what kind of detector should I build?

I don't want a toy, but I don't want to dig too deep, only to find a horse shoe...

Hello phi.gui.    Welcome to Thunting.com.   We have several members who build their own detectors.  When it comes to deciding what type of detector to build, a lot will depend upon your budget and how much experience you have working with electronics.  You may want to look at some of the posts in out "Tech Talk" boards for ideas.   (also do a search for "best detector" to get an idea of which commercial detectors are most recommended.  That should help you decide what you need in a homebuilt).

Less frustration and more fun if you buy a machine designed in a lab with the bugs already worked out of it. The Garrett Ace 250 is great on coins, along with the Fisher F-2 and the Teknetics Delta 4000, and all will run approx 200.00 Then you will have all the discrimination anyone would want, so you aren't digging nails and so on.

Welcome aboard! Building a machine yourself isn't an easy task but sure can be done. You find many good projects in our download area. Trying building a BFO or VLF machine.

Best wishes,

Christian

Don't Get me wrong on this but building a machine can cost a lot more then a New or Used Machine.

If you have the Electronic skills and back ground, cheap parts source it can be fun and rewarding.

We have a pile of skilled folk here willing to help but no time to school on the basics.

BFO

VLF

TR

PI

There all on here.   Wise

To be honest.....It would be kinda cool to make my own detector, and I think I would go for a PI.

A PI project sure has some advantages but it's biggest disadvantage remains that only a very sophisticated PI circuizt will be able to discriminate iron - one which is usually beyond a beginners capabilities. Just my two cents Smiley

Best wishes,

Christian
