Well the only advice any of us can give you is read the manual 2 or 3 times then start using it. The Ace 250 is an easy detector to use so you should be ok in no time

Welcome to the forum.
The answer to your question it’s really simple. Follow Seldom’s advice and practice.
You will understand the sounds better after 50 hours practice than 20 hours or 2 hours.
That’s something YOU have to do, and in my opinion you can’t learn of a book or a video clip.

Driller, Welcome to the forum. This is a good place to pick up tips on detecting. It has helped me a lot. I have a 250 which rides with me in my truck everywhere I go. It's a good machine and I have found more with it than with my other more expensive machine because I use it more and understand it better when it "talks to me".

Take the advice of Seldom and NIckel and also do this: Clean out a space in your back yard which will become your detector "garden". It is a garden because you are going to plant various targets in it and practice recognizing them. Gather up some targets. Good and bad. I suggest all the common current coins and silver coins if you have them. Gold and silver rings of various weights. (I used my wife's wedding ring). Gold chains of various weights, and jewlery of various shapes and sizes. Then collect some junk targets. Include a pull tab, a crushed aluminum can, tinfoil, Iron nails, and a fishing sinker. Bury the targets one at a time down about 5 inches one at a time and set your machine on all metal with no notch and #4 sensitivity and go to it. That is what I did when I got my 250 and later again when I got my F-75. I soon learned the sound each made and where it was on the display. Don't be surprised if nails read out as coins and gold rings as pull tabs. That is just the way it is. After you have buried every target by itself and know their sounds, start burying 2 at a time. A junk and a valuable target side by side an inch apart. That is the situation you most often encounter in the field.  The real learning comes after about 100 or so hours in the field digging everything you hear. It took me a year to be able to distinguish an aluminum can buried 12 inches in sand from a dime 3 inches under the soil. I still dig a can every once in a while. It is not an exact science. It is more like an art but the more you use it the better you will get. and the rewards are great! Good luck and happy hunting. Gambol. Welcome

driller,  for the Ace250, the advice that Seldom and Gambol1 have given you is the best.   (It is also the best for most detectors).   There are a few of the higher end detectors that rely on sound differentation that have ear-training CDs available, but they are the exception.     You can pick up some tips by watching some of Ace 250 videos online, but that is no substitute for learning the detector the right way (which means using YOUR detector and paying attention to what it tells you).

Welcome from Arizona

Hi and welcome. First and foremost, detect, detect, and detect. The more the merrier. Secondly, after digging hundreds of pull tabs and bottle caps you will quickly learn how they sound  Undecided . The same applies to all kind of coins, jewelry, etc. Third, your best bet is to pay close attention to the signal each item detected returns. In no time with practice you will master any machine.  Wink As far as settings, I would use factory settings for a while and then play with different settings as you become better at it.
