Go Up Go Down

Hello from Colorado. Sorry but seems I need to post 5 times before I can become a full fledged member of this board. Trying to decide which detector I need to purchase for local gold hunting as well as occasionally to AZ goldfields. So far narrowed down to Tesoro Lobo ST, Fisher Gold Bug II, or (if I can manage the funds) a Minelab SD2100. As much as it would be nice, GP 4500/5000 is way to costly for me at this time. Also interested in hooking up with someone locally (Denver) that shares the same interest and can help a newbie. Thanks.

You don't need a top of the line detector just to start out. Those Minelab machines were designed to aid prospectors in Australia in finding the really deep gold that was missed by previous generations of prospectors using detectors and heavy equipment. You would do just as well with a Minelab Sovereign or a Gold Bug when beginning. And as you get out there, you'll start collecting gold, coins, jewelry and other artifacts that will get you a nice nest egg for buying that next detector.

As an example, my two favorite machines are my Tesoro Compadre and my Minelab Eldorado Mk II. Neither of them have any special features. The Minelab doesn't even discriminate and the Compadre has only a switch setting for that. I don't use discrimination at all. You shouldn't either, when prospecting. In the past 12 months, I have found over 15,000 coins, 22 gold rings and 204 silver rings. And buckets of rubbish. I found one cache, the story of which I will share with you in my next post. A genuine pirate cache, no less.

If I liquidated all of it, I would be able to buy two Minelab GP5000 machines. But I wouldn't really need them. So I don't even look at them.

Go and buy the machine you can afford. Don't be stingy but don't be wasteful either. You'll be starting an essentially free savings account that will pay for your next detector.

Thanks to all who responded. Information was extremely valuable. Think I will just start out with GB II for now. Looking forward to getting out and finding some Gold. Got quite a few old mine dumps that might produce something with a lot of digging. At the very least, the research will be enjoyable to an old history buff!

It may seem like a lot but 15,000 coins over the average of 300 or so days in which I get out (the weather here is temperate all year round) means I only need to find 50 coins per day. You can do 100 coins in a well salted tot lot and even more on a well used beach. On the day following the warm weekends, I'm out there at 3:30am when most of the other guys who hammer the beaches are still in bed. Call me crazy, but if you use a pay phone to do it, take one of my coins.

Even if you only manage to get out on weekends during good weather, that gives you 48 days to hunt each year. You can dig almost 15,000 coins if you find 300 per day. If you strike my average of 50, you will still have 2,400 coins plus all the jewelry items that somehow sneak into your pouch.

Whites MXT, Whites Eagle II

 Waveing

Welcome to you too sir.  The Fisher GB II is an excellent choice.  I've also heard wonderful things about the Whites GMT and the MXT for Colorado gold.  The iron detection ability of either can help you keep from digging every nail or other piece of ferrous junk. (Which are so common in the old mine dumps near your locale.)  No matter what you buy, purchase a small sample nugget and take it with you when you hunt.  Place it an inch or two under the surface in the area you're hunting and note the reaction by your detector.  Very small pieces of gold can read as slightly ferrous in soils with high mineral content.  With the Whites units, if it grunts (indicating very high iron content) you can save yourself a lot of digging. (Be sure to glue your nugget to a plastic poker chip so it can be easily recovered.)  Good luck.
