First, let me welcome you to the forums. This is one fantastic place made better by everyone who joins!

Looking for sites? Start by searching your local historical societies and your local libraries for Revolutionary War sites, French and Indian War sites and War of 1812 sites. New York is riddled with them. When you find the battle sites, start looking at Google Earth for pathways that connect them to the major forts. Those pathways were the marching and camping paths for the armies on both sides. You have a lot of things you can do over the cold winter that keep you in the presence of people as you research. Trust me, your list will be huge without anyone else having to give you advice from here. Your spring will be full of sites to hunt.

Go on. Have some fun doing the research. You won't regret it. After you get your 15 posts here, you can add yourself to the buddy list and find others in your area to hunt with.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
