Look for a black roof on caves that you find.  This will indicate that someone was in the cave using fire.  Put on a mask to filter out the dust as you dig for ancient artifacts.  Don't want to get Valley Fever or Aspirgilus and other bad things you might breath in.  Use your metal detector first, then dig and sift.  I once found a half made moccoseen in a cave back in the corner that was probably stone age, then about half a dozen musket balls of .50 caliber or better near the front.  Just goes to show the different cave ages.  If you find an old Wells Fargo strong box with a big paddle lock don't try and shoot the lock off with your pistol...that only works in the movies ha.  In your backpack put some little boxes with cotton balls inside for your prize arrow heads and other breakable specimens.  If bats come flying out of the entrance just stand still and close your eyes.  They will usually fly by with out hitting you
Hi mining woman,  Look for a black roof on caves that you find. They will usually fly by with out hitting you unless they are vampire bats then cover your jugular veins ha.  Happy hunting.

Fossils can be found anywhere that you can see layered levels of rock or dirt from a cut. Believe it or not, even along side of highway or road cuts can be productive but the natural cliff faces are easiest. Utah is full of them.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
