I couldn't find the maps board to post this on so I'm posting it here. I recently downloaded ArcGIS free software and am using it to catalog my detecting sites. It is a great help in doing research. It has 11 versions of world maps including Sat. Images and street  maps. You can place markers on them, notes or overlay your own maps. One of the maps on it is a street map from the mid 90's showing the location of structures. (map 5) by comparing it with the current Sat Map I was able to locate a vacant lot where 4 houses were bulldozed back in the mid 90's. Went there with a friend yesterday and he came back with a 1942 silver dime. Another use is to send exact locations by email. Just mark it on the map and email the map to a friend.
I hope this is helpful to all. gambol Waveing
