Only 500 customers out of power, that's pretty fast in getting it restored!  That is a pretty smart relay to pinpoint the outage so precisely!  So, you are the switch maker!  Interesting about the RC car power pack fitting in a White's.

Again, good luck at the beach, when you get to it!

Hey Mudflap,

Please tell me more about the replacement battery pack for the White's (Radio Shack). I am in France and I don't think they have Radio Shacks here but if you tell me about the batteries, I may be able to buy similar batteries here.. I have an XLT and I just orded a DFX. Both take the same battery pack (rechargeable). They don't have the same strength as the AA batteries but of course, I can recharge the others..

The 8 cell flat standard NiHh packs will fit in the White's battery case (#802-5211). The covre will slide off just like the alkaline packs. The cover will come completely off if you insert a screwdriver under the center of it and pry up slightly as you pull the cover off. Cut out the old battery cells leaving about 15cm of the old 4mm wide tin strips feeding the detector connector pads. The Tenergy 9.6V 2000mAh NiMH Battery Pack for RC is one that is available a lot of places. The pack already has the cells welded. All you have to do is carefully remove the shrink plastic from the new pack so it will fit in the White's case. Cut off the R/C wiring connector from the new pack and solder the new pack wires to the tin strips feeding the detector contacts. Leave the reverse polarity diode and jack alone. Scratch the tin strips up well as they are hard to solder and take a lot of heat. I'll try to post a picture. Use the standard XLT charger as the charge rate is the same.  I think I paid $12 for the last pack I bought. They are good for 5 or 6 years.

Thanks... I'll see what I can find over here.. Left all my tools in the US when I moved here so I guess I'll go down and buy a small soldering gun and try to follow your directions.. Thanks again. I'll look forward to the picture if you can post it..

The metal strips from the charging terminals to the batteries take a fair amount of heat to solder. I've done it w a 25 watt iron but takes some time.

So, DrPepper,  you weren't kidding when you said Wilmington got "hammered," what with 3 fifths of whiskey floating in the lake!

There should be some good stuff in the flood plain when you can get to it in the Spring.  Good Luck and good hunting!    Detecting
