Back in the 70's, I had a friend in Jacksonville Florida that used to make these rings.  He sold them at a Flea Market.  It was truly  an neat form of artwork.  He also made belt buckles out of half dollars and silver dollars.  He was disabled and that was the only way he could make a decent way of life.

The silver ring made by tapping a coin with a spoon always fascinated me. A late uncle of mine came by for a visit after spending a year in the Big House for tax evasion. He had several rings he made out of coins. He said you take a silver dime or quarter. punch a hole in the center, put it on a round rod like a phillips screwdriver and then tap the edge with a spoon. The hole in the center gets bigger and so does the diameter until you get a nice smooth ring. I tried this several times when I was young but never got it to work. Probably because I left out one important step. After so many taps the silver work hardens and you go no further until you heat it to red heat to soften the metal. Once again, a little knowledge can be a frustrating thing.

I made a couple of rings for a friend of mine when I was in the Navy on board ship.  Used Italian Lire coins.  One was for him and one for his new wife.  They came out nice, because they had the artwork of the coin on the inside band.  The date of the coins were 1973 and was the year that they got married.  The tapping was done with a table spoon I had got from the galley. If I can find the one I made for myself, I will post a picture of it, and will try to show the detail that is on the inside of the coin.
