Hi 6666
I have a variety of coils but I think I like the spider coil type the best. Most of mine are plastic 11 inch disks with 2 inch deep slots approx 1 inch apart wound with 22-24 gauge avionics wire. I also have the same thing in an 8 inch size with deeper slots. When the weather gets better I have a 3ft x 3ft that I want to try it however is not a spider coil. If I can help you with anything else just let me know. RobC

Hi DOOLEY1972

How are you getting along with your project? I should think that by now you have a fully working unit like you want it to be.

Regards xavier

Go Up Go Down

hello xavier 6666 and all ,

sorry for not being on here for some time , bogged down in new job , less time to play.

as far as my detector goes , yes she is up and running and has been for some time , and is a usable deep machine , havent altered anything for some time now.

currently its a slimmed down version of the blind squirrel , but made into dual channel and has a simple op amp with red green leds attatched and also high low tone to indicate weather target rises at the start of the decay or at the end , and she works just fine.

but , not quite as good as i intended , noticed that all high conductive metals raised the decay at the start so made this light the green led and give high tone , and all low conductivity targets raise the end of the decay so made this red led and low tone ,

while testing steel was red and low tone , but in the field my discrimination isn't as good , turns out that rusty flakey iron results in green led and high tone along with "good" metals , so i still end up digging rubbish.

the idea was good , and it does discriminate , but  , it seems not against rusty iron.

oh well , no real new ideas yet , poss going to play with an IB coil on a PI , and poss try to figure out a way to get an equivelent vdi scale on a PI , now theres a long shot.

 Smiley Smiley Smiley

Hi Dooley

I finally decided to take the blind squirrel apart as I could not get it going properly first thing to go was the coil and by that I mean to remove it from the board onto witch the cable was attached and guess what I found the fault the darned earth was not soldered it was just tuck by the flux but looking at it from the solder side it looked perfectly well soldered.  Just goes to show not to make thing secure before all testing has been done.

All the best
Xavier

Hi Dooley and Xavier

I can recommend retirement it great for hobbies

Dooley did you ever draw up the opamp with the leds on it ?
I can email you some CONCEPT schematics
which may lead to VDI on a PI.

Xavier how is the MD working now with the coil soldered ?

cheers
