Ever been in a position where you are standing over a small opening in the rocks or earth and you cannot check for a reading because your coil will not fit in the opening ? Well.....make yourself a probe . Now there are many types of probes but I wanted to make something simple . I took the carbon rod antenna out of an old type radio receiver . I insulated the rod ( length about 18 cm ) by winding insulating tape around it . Then I used 0.5 mm copper wire and wound this ( close windings ) around this rod . One time was enough . I stated at one end and when I came to the other end I just folded the wire back obver the windings . Then I insulated the total with insulating tape again . The two ends , now close together I use as the input to the coil connection of the PI metal detector .  Worked like a charm ( with a little adjustment on the PI detector ) . Now I will never have to scip any small hole for examination because the probe will let me check even the smallest hole .     Cornelius

Nice Experiment, I didnt know that this kind of Pinpointer Coil works with a PI.
A Hint : the Rod Material (its Ferrite, not Carbon) is very fragile, better put it into
a PVC Pipe or something for Protection.

God advice Sauerkraut . My mistake to call Ferrite = Carbon . I knew that together we would get it done . Thank you .  Cornelius

Cornelius , It is a Great Honor to welcome you Here on Thunting.com . You did some very impressive work Years ago on P.I. metal Detectors , on a few other forums . I remember over 5 years ago you corrected schematic errors of two PI machine's , and got them to work beautifull . I am glad you are here , and that you are doing fine . I have the corrections and schematic's of some of the Re-work buried somewhere . I might post it later in our Thunting's "Do it yourself" project page . Anyway , welcome !!! Waveing.....................Regards...... Wise Wise Wise....Eugene52

Hello Cornelius,

I have also read about this construction on another forum. DO you have any advice how to achieve the best depth`E.g. by using a bigger ferrite core or more windings?

Regards,

Christian

I forgot to mention that these hollow core ferrite bars are hard to come by . Much easier to use the ferrite bars out of an old radio . I must say though that the hollow core are more sensitive , but does that matter much as long as you get a good reaction to metals  ?   Cornelius
