OK, never thought of making it flat......I assume you used double tape to hold the windings in place, else they would have jumped all over the place.
I've completed the bulk of the circuit board, the power supply portion is yet to go...the surface mount parts will require a little more careful work...but should be finished in a few days. Then testing begins. Also have to work on the arm rest and mast portion but thats an easy part.

Actually I used a jig but as you see on the pic the result was not satisfactory so I'm in the process of making a new one I will post you the pic's once it's working properly with all the necessary info to make one very simple really.

Sounds like a plan to me....I would be interested in knowing if a "flat" coil vs non-flat changes the impedance and capabilities of the search head.

Today I continue with the circuit board...its only 96*F in the garage and the AC is running..........

I one had a diagram for a MD and the coil was jumble wound so I made the coil and it was working fine but not as I had expected so I made a nice neat coil with the windings next to one another that took me a long time to do the number of turns were the same how ever when I connected the coil to the MD it was a lot worse than with the jumble coil so yes there will be a difference in inductance that's for sure I did the experiment take ten meters of wire and jumble wind it then measure the inductance now make a nice neat flat coil(with the same OD) and measure it you'll see for your self NOT the same. Now your multi layer coil will not act like a flat coil it could be that it will be a great coil and that's what I want to find out from you when you do your testing.

Good information.....my 30 turns of #30 presently reads 591 uh. I'm working on the circuit board this AM, but will try a flat wound coil at a later time and measure it. I also have a spool of #21 wire and will wind with that. It will be interesting to see what the differences are.

The board is 3.5 x 5.5 inches, IC1 in the top left, IC2 yet to be placed. After finishing all the connecting, I go thru the schematic and board proving each connection. I often find gremlin things this way. I didn't use R5, 7 & 9 variables, but they are easy enough to add later should I decide to.

Back to the bench.

Regards

OGHM

If the coil doesn't work out for the detector and reactance is correct you could use the coil for an 80m loading coil. Grin

Quit fooling around on the ham bands and lets get this detector project moving <grin>  Grin

I have some problems with my PI - 1, is anyone able to supply various voltage readings at points on the board that will help me diagnose the problem ?

Can you give us an idea of your level of expertise in electronics first? Sometimes mere voltages at test points are only a starting point.
