I've panned black sand from the beach before and found tiny gold. At the time I was sidetracked by the perfect little sapphire crystals in with the black sand. I was using a jeweler's magnifying loop. I thought it was interesting that the gold, sand & crystals were all getting grouped together because of their weight regardless of their origin.

Not necessarily.  It is possible to have black sand without having valuable minerals.   In fact, in Hawaii there are entire beaches made of black sand.   But assuming you are talking non-volcanic black sand the answer "Not necessarily.  It is possible to have black sand without having valuable minerals." still applies.   However, if there is black sand it at least bears checking out as Sue can attest.

BA

btw, I'm moving this to the prospecting board

Could be!  Even if you don't see gold don't mean it's not there.

As others have stated here, not all black sand carries valuable minerals... but they are usually worth checking even if nothing of value is visable....

Below is a summary of an assay of some black sand concentrates ...taken from known gold mining area... but all the visable gold had been removed by usuing mercury..... the black sands were void of any visable valuables of any kind.

Prior to the assay, we were rather certain anything recovered would be extremely small and probably not worth processing since we had used murcury to remove any values, as all the values listed below will be drawn into the murcury very easily.

This summary is based on how much of each mineral can be recovered per ton of this concentrate...The summary was derived from a leaching method rather than a fire assay method.   A fire assay methed of the same concentrates from another batch, but taken from the same location, acually showed less values...

listed as troy ounces per ton:

Au                 Ag                Pt                  Pd                    Rh                  Ir
2.123            45.233          0.189             0.257              0.139              0.155

None of these values were visable as stated above... but you can see, these particular black sands are very valuable and worthy of further processing and recovery.

Therefore...to fully assess the value of black sands.... one MUST do an assay of those sands... as that is the real true test of the any values present.

Good luck to you and your prospecting...

Klondike Ike

Here in New Mexico a old boy asked me what I was doing with all my Black sands.

I told him I filled the holes in my drive way with it.  He Busted out laughing.

Later I found I could get $7.00 a 40lb buck of it just for the Rare Earths in it.

I saved it up until I needed a trip to El Paso and cashed it in.

Paid the gas, and some Beer on top of that.
