I'm going to vacation on Lake Powell in Utah, and I can't find out if I can metal detect and pan for gold in the national forests/monuments up there. All my inquiries have gotten me nowhere... Anybody out there have a lead?

National Forests yes you can.

National Monuments, National Parks, and National Recreation Areas are a big and nasty no no.

Your local ranger station is the best place to find information.

Thanks Tim,
It looks like all the surrounding land is either monument, recreation area or Indian reservations. It don't appear promising!

I'm not sure, but I am thinking of putting in at Hall's Marina on the North side. I don't think I'll be visiting any Reservations.

A little north in Garfield Co. is a good place called Crescent Creek in the Henry Mountains. You do need a dredging permit if you are going to be using a sluice. No permit is required when prospecting is conducted beneath the existing water surface of an active stream channel and no mechanized or sluice equipment is used. So you are able to pan and use a detector. If you do need the permit it is free through the Utah State Department of Natural Resources, Ph. 801-538-7414.
