Dahlonega"s Diving Bell: New home sought for local historical artifact By Matt Aiken

"To the untrained eye, the large metal object sitting in a weedy stretch next to the Achasta service entrance may look like nothing more than a cast-iron tool shed. . . .

In essence the diving bell created an air-filled room at the bottom of the river. It was there that one or two prospectors apparently sifted through the muck in search for gold.

?They were actually on the river bottom and they had those short shovels and they were scooping up the ore,? said local history expert Anne Amerson.

This diving bell was lost in 1876 when the large boat that was carrying it reportedly took a dive in the then-much-deeper waters of the Chestatee.

. . . ancient machine and realized that the piece appeared to be a possible precursor to the submarines developed during the Civil War"
