Go Up Go Down

At first I thought I'd come across another deposit of iron pyrite and was about to plod on, but something made me turn back. That patch of soil is literally peppered with thousands of metallic flakes ranging from 2-3 mm across to very find powdery stuff. Some of the larger bits are angular, and some are like little globs with rounded parts.

As I'm still a neophyte in prospecting, my panning skills suck big time. Took the stuff home, washed it as best I could to get rid of clay and vegetation, dried it and ran a magnet thru it to get rid of most of the black sand.

Characteristics of metallic flakes:

Hardness- can be easily indented with fingernail, very malleable, can be stabbed with needle (please refer to attached photo) and doesn't shatter.
Streak- ranges from coppery red to light silvery-yellow to gold.

Please note that I am not allowing myself to call those flakes "gold"...YET. For various reasons, I am trying to avoid consulting a goldsmith and any usage of acids for the time being.

Hope some of you more-experienced guys can answer my questions:

1) Are there any metallic minerals which have characteristics similar to these flakes? I can only say with certainty that this stuff is not iron pyrite.
2) What would be your recommended method (apart from panning) of separating those flakes and fine powder from the sand?

Thanks!

Based on what I see, I'd say you need to run, not walk, to an assayer. If you can afford it, get your own Mizar Gold Test Kit. They run around $125.00 US on eBay at auction with some going much lower. You do seem to have an eye for paydirt, mate.

Yes it will...thanks! Need to put an end to this guesswork. I have loupes and a few digital scales already...found the same company selling via amazon.com the ET18 alone...even tho it'll only test down to 10K Au, I need one. Will have to find other methods of testing for under-10K stuff.

Dang!

From what you say about the needle and Malleable, I think you have the goods.

In the photo I see what could be Course Gold.

Tap a peace with a hammer and if it flattens out, Buddy you more then likely have gold.

What State is this from?

Some gold has a rather High Silver content.

It's a hodgepodge mix! Some flakes squished under my thumb when doing streak test...become incredibly thin yellow when dragged across the ceramic. Some flatten immediately under a gentle tap from a hammer, others take 2 or 3 taps to flatten. Samples been sent out of town for a pro's analysis (too many gossips in this small place...if u know what i mean Wink) I think I have the real stuff...and I must really shut up now. Smiley

If your area had a history of mining, there could be Mercury over the gold.
