if I'm finding small garnets while panning for gold in my secret spot. It makes me wonder, should i be on the look out for bigger garnets? I dont' know if this is possible, or if so where and what should i do to help the hunt?

Can't say I've ever done any deliberate garnet prospecting.....but you might pick up some tips at the following until someone with experience comes along:

(Sounds to me that if there are bigger garnets around, you're downstream of them......but you may be finding the biggest ones around.   Crystals are funny things.  Just because you find small ones doesn't mean the conditions were right for big ones to form.)

I've never really dug for garnets either, just found em panning or in old tailings. This place is famous for garnet digs, you might get some info from them.

If there is a substantial garnet in your pan you WILL see it. They aren't that hard to miss. Most garnets you find though will be very small, and of low quality. I still save mine in a glass vial mainly because they look nice. When I first got into prospecting I was looking at rocks and found a really crumbly rock that had a bunch of smaller red rocks in it. I crumbled it up in my hand and tossed it away later to reallize that all of those little red rocks were gem quality garnets. Oops. My bad.

Peace

Sean

Thats why I hunt the old tailing piles, many of the old miners tossed out some good stuff too Smiley

Old tailing piles are great. Many of the big dredges in Idaho were on 40-60% efficient. In a nut shell they kept all of the real big stuff and the bread and butter was left behing piled conveniently for people to go through again at a much later date.

I was fishing a stream in Montana last fall and noticed a huge car sized boulder of quartz that had marble sized garnet's impregnated in it.  I plan to take a trip back this summer to pan and see if i cant chip them out somehow without destroying the size and quality.  I always justfigued i would see some in the sluice but didnt think about there orjin till that day.

good luck

One place I pan , I find Corundums in every few Pans.

Most are Rounded by time but still the same.  Not so small up to 1/4 " or so I keep them all.

Most are White , Yellow and Some on the Pink side.

This website is very informative on such subjects. Dan Hausel is quite the impressive geologist.

Homefire and seanengman, thanks for the links.  I'll probably post both of them over in useful links tomorrow.
