Xav, brace yourself for the shipping cost. I requested registered mail shipping, for safety's sake

I hear you loud and clear but from what I see and read this pan is the answer, even if I only find a spec of color it will all have been worth it to me

My home-made sluice SUCKS!

It's not easy to make these kind of things that's why sometimes we think that it's expensive but if only we knew how long it took to get it right we'd be happy to pay the price. (I should have been a poet)

The color this pan gleaned from my repanning has been dried and weighed. I can now safely say with 100% certainty that the batpan has more than paid for itself and the shipping cost. Didn't take long!  But here's a caveat: please don't look to this pan as the penultimate answer. You got a good head-start, being so close to that historic gold-bearing body of water, but you need a little bit more. Read the river, look for black sands and other heavies. When (not if) you come across some gold-bearing material, this pan will get it for you. The good pastor was not exaggerating when he said that this pan will give you instant gratification; if there's gold in the material, you'll see it in the vertex of the pan very fast! Wink

Speaking for myself, it's not the cost of the equipment that bothers me. It's the combination of fantastical shipping costs, the customs brokerage fee, the 10% tax on stuff above MYR500, and most of all the late-night calls from certain authorities with funny questions that cheese me off at times. If I was stateside, I'd have in my hands at least one nice Bazooka fluid bed sluice by now, along with a plethora of other items I deem necessary for proper prospecting. You don't know how long I been drooling at a Keene highbanker. But I'm not stateside, and so I'll attempt to build my own fluid-bed sluice in an an effort to avoid such hassles. Mind you, it's not always like that; kinda depends on one's luck..several items I've imported before did not involve much jumping thru hoops. OK end of rant!

Well I will probably never get to use a sluice here in SA as mining gold is prohibited and should you be able to get a prospectors permit you're not allowed to sell your gold  Idiot Idiot
So I want to do this just to see if I can find gold but nothing else.

Yeah and to make it worse, it would appear that if you were to somehow legally come into possession of gold and somehow have a permit to sell it you are obligated under the law to offer it for sale to the South African Treasury.   Can we say shaes of Ayn Rand's  Atlas Shrugged ?

Homie just gave Xav a big hint.  Wink

Aaah...ok BA, lets get back on topic. Playmoore, don't forget to wash your new pans thoroughly before use, and season them with some 1000 grit sandpaper. The idea is to get rid of any oils from the manufacturing process, and slightly roughen the surface for better holding of heavies.

As a point of interest, I once wrote to a pan manufacturer. In lots of 1000 pieces, a 10" pan is USD0.50 each and the largest size they made (think it was 16") was USD0.76.
