I've often noticed reddish/blackish stains emerging from between layers of sandstone. I believe these are called gossian stains and miners have used such stains as indicators of auriferous  areas. Anyone ever found gold in sandstone before?

Damn I misspelled a word. It's "gossan", not "gossian".
On sandstone and not in it you say? Then those patches of sandstone are devoid of the good stuff. They were exposed by landslides after the past monsoon and all topsoil was washed off.

Try the top of that sand stone.   It could have worked as a false bed rock.

Will try the top, thanks...there's some earth left there. Was not really looking forward to belaying down the exposed sandstone...it's about 60-70 degree slope.
